What a Houston summer does to a bathroom
Nine months of heat and humidity, and the grout goes first. What is worth cleaning, what is worth fixing, and how to tell which one you are looking at.
Every climate has a room it is hardest on. In Houston it is the bathroom, and the reason is dull but useful: for most of the year the air outside holds more moisture than the air inside, so a room that is already generating steam has nowhere convenient to lose it.
What you actually see
It shows up in the same order every time. First the grout in the shower darkens, usually along the bottom two courses of tile where the water sits longest. Then the sealant at the base of the shower tray or the edge of the tub picks up spotting. Then, if it goes long enough, the ceiling above the shower.
None of that is a sign that the bathroom is dirty in any ordinary sense. It is a sign the room is not drying out between uses.
What cleaning fixes, and what it does not
Surface mildew on tile, grout and sealant cleans off, and a deep clean takes the shower to the grout line properly rather than wiping the face of it. That resets the room, and in a well-ventilated bathroom it stays reset for months.
If it comes back within a few weeks, cleaning is not your answer. The extractor is either not running long enough, not moving enough air, or venting into the attic instead of outside, and no amount of scrubbing will out-run any of those. We would rather tell you that than sell you the same clean four times a year.
The cheap things that help
Run the extractor for fifteen minutes after the shower rather than switching it off with the light; a timer switch costs very little and does this for you. Leave the shower door open rather than closed. Squeegee the glass, which takes ten seconds and removes most of the water that would otherwise evaporate back into the room.
